Challenges

To accommodate complex and evolving business needs, the investment bank has decided to upgrade the reporting module of its internal derivatives trading system to tackle the following challenges:

  1. Poor user experience

Internal system upgrades often face resistance because employees are reluctant to spend time learning a new system. Paradoxically, the development department must proceed with upgrades to meet new business requirements and keep up with the fast-paced business environment. As a result, the usage of the new system often falls short of expectations, forcing another round of upgrades. This cycle not only wastes development resources but also reduces the effectiveness of system updates.

  1. Insufficient online editing capabilities

Data analysis is a critical part of investment bank operations, as analysts need to identify trends from large datasets. However, in the current system’s reporting module, processing datasets with more than tens of thousands of rows causes noticeable lag, making it difficult to perform smooth data analysis. As a result, the system has effectively become just an “Excel download tool.”

  1. Unable to meet customized needs

Analysts have various personalized data processing needs, such as copy-paste, undo-redo, drag-fill, multi-condition filtering, cross-highlighting, and multi-column sorting. However, the development team’s lengthy response time makes it difficult to quickly address these custom feature requests.

  1. Unable to collaborate

Analysts typically share data analysis results by forwarding xlsx files to each other, but any new data or modifications cannot be synchronized in real time, reducing work efficiency. Moreover, employees’ desktops, email inboxes, and chat groups are flooded with numerous Excel files, causing important data to slip out of the company’s control and increasing the risk of data leakage.

Solution

To improve overall efficiency of the system, the investment bank’s R&D department collaborated with the Univer team to embed Univer into the reporting module of the derivatives trading system, achieving the following results:

  1. Quick start for analysts

Univer is an isomorphic full-stack framework that allows developers to generate spreadsheet snapshots on the server side using the Univer API. These snapshots are JSON data structures defined by Univer and can seamlessly integrate structured data into reports. After embedding the Univer SDK, analysts can perform online data analysis directly within the system using Univer Spreadsheets. The user experience is consistent with Excel, supporting features like selection statistics, copy-paste, undo-redo, drag-fill, inserting/deleting rows and columns, and freezing. Analysts can quickly get started without any training, which improves system adoption and reduces development costs.

  1. Processing data on a million-scale

Univer uses canvas to render spreadsheet content, along with techniques like texture rendering and incremental caching, which greatly improve rendering performance. These technologies allow Univer to handle millions of rows of data on a single system page, enabling analysts to process and analyze large datasets online.

  1. High extensibility

Univer uses a modular plugin architecture, with each plugin corresponding to a specific function. Currently, Univer has over 100 built-in plugins, covering a wide range of features such as toolbars, copy-paste, permission management, charts, and pivot tables. Developers can extend these existing plugins or create new custom plugins to meet analysts’ personalized data analysis requirements, thereby enhancing the system’s flexibility and functional depth.

  1. Collaborative Editing

Univer supports multi-user collaborative editing with real-time data updates. Using the OT algorithm, the system can resolve editing conflicts between analysts, allowing up to 200 people to edit a spreadsheet simultaneously and 1,000 people to view the same sheet at the same time, fully meeting industry-leading standards. Additionally, Univer can integrate with the investment bank’s permission management system, ensuring data security while enabling employees to share data with a single URL link, accelerating information flow and improving work efficiency.
